A Hard Rain in Dallas and a Hoary Cliché About Seattle “Dallas is looking a lot like Seattle these days,” reported Reuters, as “drenching rains pounded the city and north-central Texas again on Wednesday, forcing the precautionary evacuation of thousands of residents from several communities to the west of Fort Worth that were threatened with possible flooding.” Believe it or not, Seattle is not threatened with flooding during the summer; in fact, if you look at the average rainfall patterns for both cities, Dallas gets significantly more rain than Seattle during the summer months, with the pattern reversed for late fall and winter. Average monthly rainfall 1971 – 2000 (in inches)
Seattle doesn’t even make the top ten rainiest places in the continental United States, based on yearly rainfall averages:
Rather, it comes in at 130, with Portland, Oregon. As for the rainiest places in June, forget about the Pacific Northwest, it’s the Southeast that’s getting drenched.
Seattle turns out to be one of the least rainy places to be in the U.S. in June. View the Technorati Link Cosmos for this entry
