Though scientific publications are not perfect and the peer-review process used to vet studies can fail,a study that has been published in a peer-reviewed journal is almost always a better bet to take seriously than one which has not yet been published or one that has been published in a nonprofessional publication. The more prestigious the journal — Nature, Science, the Journal of the American Medical Association, the New England Journal of Medicine are the big four — the more likely the study is to be reliable. (But see the next topic for an important caveat.)
